Police in Houston reported that the body of a woman in her 60s was discovered lodged in the jaws of an alligator on Tuesday morning.
The unidentified woman’s remains were found around 8:40 a.m. within the mouth of the reptile, which was roaming in the Horsepen Bayou, as stated in a news release by the Houston Police Department. At the time of the incident, officers were searching for a missing woman, according to the department.
To prevent further harm to the remains, a Houston police sergeant shot the alligator, the department explained.
After the discovery, the dive team from the Houston Police Department arrived at the scene and recovered both the remains and the alligator from the bayou, as stated in the release.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is currently conducting an autopsy to ascertain the woman’s cause of death and her identity, police added.
Angela Derous, who was fishing in the bayou on Tuesday night, informed KTRK that alligators “live down there.”
“We see 8 feet, 10 feet babies,” Derous remarked. “I know which banks to stay away from and where they like to lay in the sun. That’s the first time I’ve heard of that happening down here. It’s a little scary.”
Although rare, fatalities caused by alligators in Texas are uncommon, with the last reported incident dating back to 2015. In that instance, a 28-year-old man was fatally attacked by an alligator while swimming in the Adams Bayou in Orange, Texas, as reported by KTRK. According to the Houston-based TV station, this marks the first fatal attack in over 90 years.
