Former President Donald Trump has been closely following the federal gun trial of Hunter Biden, the son of his political rival for the White House. However, rather than focusing on politics, the case has directed his attention towards the devastating toll of addiction.
Biden stands accused of falsifying information on a federal form and to a gun dealer regarding his drug use when purchasing a revolver in October 2018. While he has admitted to struggling with a crack addiction, his defense argues that he was sober at the time of the gun purchase and had no intention to deceive.
During a Fox News interview on Wednesday, when Trump was questioned about the trial, the conversation shifted to the topic of alcohol. Trump, whose brother Fred Trump Jr. succumbed to complications from alcoholism, revealed that he himself has never consumed alcohol.
“I had a brother who suffered tremendously from alcoholism,” Trump shared with Sean Hannity. “And it was a terrible thing to watch. He was an incredible guy with the best personality. He was the best-looking person you have ever seen. Everything was perfect. But he had an addiction.”
Testimony during Biden’s trial has been emotionally charged. His ex-wife, Kathleen Buhle, expressed concern about the possibility of their children coming across drugs or drug-related items. She confronted him after discovering a pipe in the ashtray on the porch of their Washington, D.C. residence in July 2015.
A former girlfriend, Zoe Kestan, attested that throughout their relationship, Biden acknowledged his addiction. “He spoke about no matter how long you are sober you will be an addict,” she conveyed to the jury.
When asked about the trial, Trump conveyed sympathy, drawing from his personal experience of witnessing the devastating effects of addiction. “Look, I feel very badly for them in terms of the addiction part of what they have right now,” Trump remarked.
Hunter Biden has long been a subject of scrutiny for congressional Republicans, who have alleged that he leveraged his father’s political position for personal gain. However, amidst Hunter Biden’s trial, Republican focus has shifted towards outrage over Trump’s recent conviction in a New York hush money trial. Trump has vowed to appeal the conviction.
