Caitlin Clark was not named to the US women’s basketball team roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the chair of the team’s selection committee expressed satisfaction with the selection process.
Jen Rizzotti, chair of the women’s national team committee for USA Basketball, did not provide specific reasons for Clark’s exclusion but acknowledged her consideration in the decision-making.
“This has been a three-year process for us. Caitlin, along with other players who didn’t make the team, have been evaluated based on their overall performance. While there were some unique circumstances surrounding Caitlin, I’m proud that our committee remained focused on the selection criteria,” she stated. “None of those criteria include factors like TV viewership or marketability.
“It was our responsibility as a committee to choose the 12 players who, according to our selection criteria – despite any discussions about TV ratings or jersey sales – met the specified standards. The selection criteria were clearly outlined for us, and we had to block out any external influences.”
The selection committee utilized 11 criteria to determine the roster:
- U.S. citizenship
- Availability
- Position
- Playing ability
- Versatility to play other positions
- Coachability
- Attitude
- Adaptability to team concept
- Leadership
- Adaptability to international game
- Likelihood of contributing to team success
The decision to omit Clark from the Olympic roster has sparked controversy in the basketball community, with arguments presented on both sides regarding her suitability for the team.
Clark expressed her lack of disappointment at not being chosen and conveyed excitement for the players who did make the roster.
“I view it as something to strive for. That’s a dream. Hopefully, one day I can achieve it. It’s just extra motivation,” she remarked earlier this week.
